The final phase of the eventing competition has concluded at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, with Andrew Hoy and Vassily de Lassos the highest placed Australian combination. The pair jumped a clear showjumping round to climb the leaderboard and finish in 4th place, just 2.5 penalties off the bronze medal position. Finishing on their dressage score, there wasn’t much more they could do - what an outstanding performance! It was to be one of only four double clears in the competition.

Chris Burton and Cooley Lands also jumped clear, however that costly 20 penalties in the cross country on Saturday meant they finished the event in 36th place on 48.6. Next was Shane Rose and Virgil; again, another fantastic clear showjumping round and that 28 penalties from the cross country proved costly. They finished in 43rd position on 57.4.

Unfortunately Emma McNab didn’t have the greatest of showjumping rounds - 26 penalties saw her fall to 46th place on 59.8. She was the highest placed Aussie after the dressage and only picked up 6.8 time faults on the cross country, so it was a shame the showjumping didn’t quite go as planned.

In the end it was a great performance for Great Britain’s Rosalind Canter and Allstar B who finished on their dressage score of 24.6 to take the gold medal. Silver went to Ireland’s Padraig McCarthy and Mr Chunky, who also finished on their dressage score of 24.6. Unfortunately for Germany’s Ingrid Klimke, a showjumping rail cost her the gold medal and saw her finish on 27.3 in the bronze medal position with SAP Hale Bob OLD.

To the team placings, and Australia finished in 6th place, behind Great Britain (1st), Ireland (2nd), France (3rd), Japan (4th), and Germany (5th). Surprisingly, NZ were out of the placings in 7th with none of their riders going clear in the showjumping.
