Australia aiming for first win in a decade at Kentucky

Headley Britannia

The last Aussie winners at Kentucky, Lucinda Fredericks and Headley Britannia.

By Equestrian Life

It’s been ten years since Lucinda Fredericks and Headley Britannia won the Kentucky Three-Day Event. The pair won in 2009, and were the last Australian combination to win at the prestigious event.

Andrew Hoy and Master Monarch were the first Aussies to taste success in Kentucky in 2006 – the first year the event ran without the steeplechase component. Clayton Fredericks backed it up in 2007 with Ben Along Time, before Lucinda made it three wins for Australia.

Former Australian Phillip Dutton – who was the highest placed Aussie on numerous occasions at Rolex – won the event for the first time in 2008 aboard Connaught. However, it was a win for the USA with Dutton announcing his American citizenship two years prior. In fact, Dutton’s win was the last for the USA, so their dry spell at Kentucky has been even longer than ours!

Recently, the event has been dominated by Europeans, with Ollie Townend of Great Britain winning last year, Michael Jung of Germany the three years prior to that, and William Fox-Pitt in 2014. New Zealand’s Andrew Nicholson won in 2013, William Fox-Pitt in 2012 and 2010, and Mary King of Great Britain in 2011.

In 2019, three Australians will saddle up at the Kentucky CCI5* – Clayton Fredericks, Hazel Shannon and Dominic Schramm. Can they achieve the first Aussie win in a decade? We’ll have to wait and see!
