The Australian equestrian community has been saddened by the passing of showing and breeding legend Maureen Walker this week.

With the love of horses running deep in her veins, Maureen grew up in the saddle and spent a childhood competing on the show circuit from her hometown of Wyong and was a regular at the Sydney Royal over the years.

Maureen and her husband, Bruce Walker, started Marena Stud in 1957 and took pride in guiding all their horses through each stage of breeding, training, and showing.

With the influence of her grandfather being a stockman and growing up around working horses, Maureen incorporated the Stock Horse into her breeding program to produce refined and sturdy show mounts that would go on to lead highly successful riding careers.

In high demand as an instructor and trainer, Maureen was also a well-respected judge and even travelled overseas in 2011 to judge at the Horse of the Year Show in New Zealand.

Maureen took great pride and effort to keep the equine community up-to-date with the news from Marena Stud by publishing small newsletters to their website.

Maureen’s final letter that she published in 2015 ends with her ‘Quote of the Month’ that reads: “Life was not meant to be easy, But take courage child, Because it can be delightful. Love and best wishes, Maureen Walker.”

Equestrian Life wishes to extend its sincerest condolences to Maureen’s family, friends, and all those who are impacted by her passing.
