Badminton or Hickstead?

The Crown

Series Four of The Crown depicts Princess Anne competing at Badminton... or is it Hickstead?

The iconic Hickstead venue has doubled for the equally famous Badminton Horse Trials venue in series four of the latest series of the Netflix hit, The Crown.

Hickstead has been used as the filming location for scenes from the Badminton Horse Trials, at which Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, is seen competing in the showjumping phase at the 1979 event, finishing in sixth place.

The role of Princess Anne is played by Erin Doherty, who took riding lessons to prepare for the role, however the action scenes filmed at Hickstead were performed by regular Hickstead competitor Amy Inglis. She is seen jumping a clear round over an impressive course including iconic fences such as the Al Shara'aa Derby wall, infront of a cheering crowd added using computer graphics!

While this part of the show was focused on The Princess Royal's success at Badminton Horse Trials, Princess Anne did indeed compete at Hickstead, winning the combined training in 1973 on her famous horse Doublet. The Princess Royal has also visited the showground on a number of occasions in an official capacity, while Her Majesty The Queen is the official patron of the Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead.
