The Dales Pony, otherwise known as ‘Dales’, are a native mountain pony from the Yorkshire Dales of England. 

This sturdy breed was originally bred to be a pack horse for the lead industry, which thrived between the Roman times until the mid-19th Century. 

The Dales breed grew a reputation for its strength, intelligence and stamina, and soon became the breed of choice for many people of the Yorkshire area. 

The Dales breed are often black, with a thick mane and tale, although they can also sometimes be brown, grey and roan. They can sometimes be seen with either a star, or a snip on their nose, or a small sock on their back legs, but many are just the one colour, with no markings. 

Dales often stand between 14 and 14.2hh. They have extremely muscular legs, with feathers and hard hooves, making them the ideal pulling candidate.

The modern day Dales are fantastic all-rounder ponies, as they’re intelligent, courageous and quiet. Dales can be seen competing in the dressage, showing and show jumping arena, as well as out hunting and eventing.
