Thought to be one of the oldest breeds in the world, the beautiful Lusitano’s existence can be traced back to 1700BC thanks to paintings in the Escoural Caves in Alentejo.

Traditionally bred for bullfighting and equitation, rather than parade, the Portuguese Lusitano has a more workmanlike build than Spanish breeds such as the Andalusian.

Like many warmblood breeds, Lusitanos mature late - most aren’t expected to reach the peak of their training until age 12, with many continuing work well into their 20s.

The breed is often used to manage cattle on estates across Portugal, and was therefore bred primarily for the canter. Their talent for the canter and collected work has meant that many Lusitanos excel in the dressage arena.
