Dressage legend Isabell Werth signals possible retirement plans

Queen of the dressage world, Isabell Werth, has signalled that she may retire from competition following the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

The 5-time Olympian has won gold at every Games she has attended, is the most decorated equestrian of all time, and has dominated the World No.1 position until only recently when fellow German Jessica Von Bredow-Werndl overtook her on the FEI rankings.

Competing at the FEI European Dressage Championship in Hagen last week, Werth claimed a team gold and individual silver riding Weihegold OLD.

Speaking with the German Press Agency following the competition, Werth said the Paris 2024 Games would be a turning point.

“Then at some point [my] active career will end,” she said.

“Whether that’s 2024 or 2025, I’ll find a sensible deal.”

Werth’s announcement comes only weeks after her decision to retire her reigning world champion dressage mare, Bella Rose, from competition.
