Well, if I didn't believe in miracles before, I sure do now! Just as I thought that my dream of qualifying for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games was over, I got a phone call that would change everything.

I was in the middle of moving house when my phone rang, a Dutch number appeared. I answered the phone and heard my friend's voice, Bo Nolten. Within a few minutes into the conversation, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Bo had generously asked me if I would like to come try one of her stallions, to see if he would be a suitable ride for Rio. Of course I said yes!! So, now I'm sitting here in Holland writing this, having to pinch myself. Bo has offered me the ride on her Palomino Frederiksborg stallion, Valentin BDN. On the flight over, I couldn't help but to keep thinking how it would feel to ride him. Now I know, and I'm so glad I do!! Massive thank you to Bo Nolten, Team BDN and Inge Coenen for the incredibly warm welcome into their stables. Words can't describe how truly thankful I am.

I flew out of Australia on Friday 26th February and landed in The Netherlands on Saturday 27th February. I have settled in very well over here and funnily enough, I am enjoying the cold weather! After taking a few days to settle in, I went to finally go meet and ride Valentin BDN. And what a special horse this bloke is! Even after only a few rides he has taught me a lot, I think this is going to be an incredible journey. Our first competition together will be at the Rio qualification and selection event in Deauville, France, from the 7th-10th April 2016. Then, only a few short weeks later, we will compete again in Waregem, Belgium, from the 22-24th April. But it doesn't stop there! We then then also compete at Roosendaal, The Netherlands, from the 19-22nd May. This will be the final selection event for a chance to earn a spot on the Australian Paralympic team for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. The Australian team will be announced shortly after the completion of all three of the selection events. In order to be considered for selection, Valentin BDN and I must achieve a score of 67% and over.

I have now been in Holland for almost a week. I am definitely missing my partner, family and friends back home. It's quite daunting being a strange country all on your own, but it has already made me grow so much in only a short amount of time. What I do miss terribly though, is my Furst Nymphenburg mare, Matavia Furst Lady, from back at home. I wish I could just put her on a plane and send her over here for me to continue working with her! I bet she is enjoying her break, though, and is having fun out in the paddock with her beloved jolly ball!

So, long story short, my dreams were crumbling at my feet one day, and the very next, I was booking a plane ticket to Holland to pursue them. Life is certainly a funny thing! After all, good things come to those who work hard and never, ever give up!

Until next time,

Liz Sobecki.
