The first jumping event of the World Equestrian Games, the Team & Individual First Competition (Speed), is complete in Tryon. With a 124 combinations in action, there was a mix of results for competitors with many refusals, falls and also some simply stunning rounds. Fortunately, the four Australians all produced the latter!

Rowan Willis and Blue Movie were standout performers, finishing in 3rd place with a blistering 76.95! The pair jumped clear and were incredibly fast against the clock, only a touch behind the outstanding Swiss combination of Steve Guerdat and super mare Bianca on 76.33 seconds, and Brazil’s Pedro Veniss and Quabri de I’Isle on 76.68 seconds.

Billy Raymond  with Oaks Redwood in 34th position on 83.29 seconds (79.29). Had he not had a rail down, the pair’s time would have had them in current 5th position!

Jamie Kermond and Yandoo Oaks Constellation sit in 35th place on 83.39 seconds; they jumped clear but were a little slower on course.

In 44th place currently is Scott Keach and Fedor; the Rio Olympians jumped clear to finish on 84.78 seconds.

Australia is currently in 5th place in the teams event.

The jumping is only just getting started at WEG. There is still the Team and Individual Second Competition (Round 1 and Round 2) before team medals are decided; the individual competition then continues with the Individual Third Competition (Round A and Round B).
