LH Mr Perci excels

By Team Joyce

Team Joyce were in turmoil for many months deciding whether to keep or sell LH Mr Percival. We bred and broke him in. It was such a long wait mainly because it has taken so long for him to grow into his mammoth 17.3 hh body. Wes made sure he very basically broke him at the age of two it was very brief swift and quick so he was not pressured or stressed. He was able to quietly hop on and do the basics - that was all we aimed for. Then over the next few years he was constantly in and out again in lots of short stints. His knees were so big, the size of his girth is the biggest we have seen in a very long time. Not to mention how much feeding to keep him covered while growing. Lots of Barastoc Breed N Grow.

Perci has two kind eyes and really took to Wes, we could all catch him etc, but he loved Wes. As a 4 year old he went to his first 75cm freshman day in July and was a real gentlemen. Long, lanky and slow, but perfect.

We have to give him two bays in the truck to fit his body in with head room. Team Joyce knew he was going to be a great natured horse after his unflappable behaviour at the Dandenong Agricultural show. He did not get upset with the carriage horses, fireworks or rides along with all the other hype of the show. Wes loved his canter stride from the beginning, he was very well balanced for such a large horse, all he needed was time. Lots of time to grow mature and stay sound. He definitely needs at least another 2 years of riding out and about before he would be ready to fully campaign and with this in mind the decision to sell was the obvious one because Wes feels he wishes to spend that time with one older going quicker he feels his own age is catching up with him.

Wes on LH Mr Percival at his first EA Showjumping show

Within 1 week a phone call from Stephen Valentine asking for information about our boy. He was looking for a hunter. Wes decided Perci would be in his element in Eventing due to his fluent movement, Hunting because he is not fazed or dazzled by other horses galloping around, showjumping because he does not spook at new obstacles. Really this fella was going to tackle any new plan. He is very versatile.

Stephen sounded quite keen and we advised it was a very genuine nice horse and was sure to make him happy. Within two days they wanted a vet check wanting over 30 x-rays to check his joints. He passed with flying colours. Then the ride, yes you read that right, the ride after the vet check. Wes jokingly said to Stephen before he climbed aboard, “Stephen I actually want more for this horse now”. Stephen was a little dazzled. Wes said, ”Because the horse did not actually pass the vet check, it’s obvious you’re now negotiable on your price?” Seeing as though Perci passed with flying colours he is theoretically  worth more money! Ha ha ha, we all laughed it was a joke…

Stephen and Joel Coco and Gabby the two adorable dogs seemed very pleased with how the ride went and are the new proud riders of LH Mr Percival. Now for some of Stephens words as it’s always wonderful as a breeder to hear from your clients after the horse has performed away from home.

Dear Wes and Trish,

Just letting you know the little fella has settled in nicely. He knows when the buggy comes to the gate its feed time, but one thing I can’t get over is his trainability. He’s coming along more and more each day and I am simply amazed at how easy he is. He’s picked up shoulder in in two days and is leg yielding with confidence.

LH Mr Percival with his boss

First combined training day Langwarrin – popped around like a pro in the 85cm. He had an enormous go at the cross country and loved it, not batting an eye lid. He stepped over the jump into the water and walked through it. He definitely has the scope to go far in the eventing world. He loves Joel and everywhere Joel was, he wanted to be. Even the boss can’t wait to ride him. You’ve outdone yourselves breeding such a star. LH Mr Percival had his first outing for us and a superstar he is.

Cheers,
Steve, Joel, & Perci

Wes is so glad he is taking it all in his stride it’s one thing to say yes we think his nature will suit when you came to look at him. To see him adapting is wonderful. Team Joyce encourages buyers to keep in touch we do care about the horses performing well in whatever they were purchased for.
