Przewalski’s horse proposed to receive highest level of protection

Przewalski's horse - Labelled for reuse

By Equestrian Life

The government of Mongolia has submitted a proposal regarding Przewalski’s horse (and also the Gobi bear) to the 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS COP12). The summit, which is the only international treaty devoted exclusively to migratory animal species, will see 120 countries gather in the Phillipines this week.

If the proposal passes, it means the species will be afforded the highest protection status under CMS.

Przewalski’s horse is the only surviving species of wild horse that has not been domesticated. A last confirmed sighting of these horses in the wild was recorded in 1969, however they survived in captivity and thanks to a successful captive breeding program the species was re-introduced to the wild in 2008. As of January 2014, there were 1,988 of these horses living in the wild and captivity combined.
