A recent article published in the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) has set tongues wagging in equestrian circles. Titled ‘A successful future for equestrian sport in Australia is in the balance’, the article brings several issues to light and asks some tough questions of both Equestrian Australia (EA) and the sport in general. 

EA’s board is singled out as problematic in the article, citing the resignation of Leigh Clifford - the “hoped-for saviour of Equestrian Australia” – as a symptom of wider problems within the organisation. Chris Styring has also recently resigned from the board. 

Safety in the eventing discipline, cancellation of key events, conflicts of interest between EA board members and event organisers, a positive swab in the lead up to the Rio Olympics, and the lack of Australian Sports Commission (ASC) funding for the disciplines of dressage and showjumping are also cited in the article as key issues facing the sport.
