Team BMW win the BMW NZ Polo Open

An outstanding game of Polo between BMW and VeriFone in the Final of the BMW NZ Polo Open has resulted in a win to BMW by just one goal.  The match was played last Sunday at the Auckland Polo Club in Clevedon just south of Auckland.  John Paul Clarkin and his team had to draw on all their skills to head off Will Lucas and VeriFone in the final chukka.  Final score BMW 9 – VeriFone 8.

The captains of both teams featured in the special award ceremony.  Will Lucas won Most Valuable Player and John Paul Clarkin’s pony Heidi was chosen as the Best Playing Pony.

In the other games Mitavite beat Peroni  by 8 goals to 7 and Rodd & Gunn defeated Veuve Clicquot 10 -7

Despite an ominous forecast and some heavy rain earlier in the week, Clevedon turned on a stunning weekend. The fields and grounds at The Auckland Polo Club were able to dry out and provided perfect conditions for the big games.

The huge crowd enjoyed not only the Polo but some splendid field side hospitality.  There was something for everyone with beautifully presented corporate marquees, car boot parties and family picnics on the hill.

Fashion is something many enjoy at the Polo and this year a fashion show by leading Australian designer Charlie Brown was a highlight of the lunch break.  The parade was organised by New Idea Fashion Editor Lulu Wilcox and drew an appreciative audience.
