Team Joyce - Introducing Tiffany Joyce

Welcome to Team Joyce

Introducing Tiffany Joyce ...

How long have you been riding for? Since I was 2 ½ years of age

How long have you been showing jumping for? Since I was 3 years of age, my parents helped us to ride every day and almost all day. The pony was saddled in the morning and put to bed last thing at night. Our dad even gave us a flat and jumping lesson from the very beginning, he would run after us on foot to help our pony go fast enough to jump! I would laugh and giggle all day long with my sister Sarah in the riding ring on a pony each. We even double dink on the 8hh Shetland bareback and cantered until we feel off.

Favourite thing about riding? The enjoyment of being with my dad, mum and sister we used to travel every weekend all together talking about how each of our horses performed, to gain more knowledge on how to improve next time because there is always a next time!!

Hints or words of wisdom?
  • Never give up if even if it’s not your day!
  • Only go as quick as your horse can go in Jump offs.
  • Be patient.
  • Start from the lower levels and work your way up.
  • Appreciate a good horse because they only come around once in a life time!

Personal training programs or approaches to a new horse, middle aged horse etc?
  • Dad always taught us to be patient.
  • Keep your horse happy.
  • Start off slow and work your way up.
  • Only jump as high as your horse is capable of, know its limits as they may be less than your own!
  • Keep the fitness work different and fun.
  • Do not start in too many classes in one day.
  • Remember there is always another show, so if the one you’re at did not go so well try again next time!

Key approaches to troubleshooting some common training and horse problems within discipline?
  • Riders want to win every event, try to set your horse for certain events because you cannot win them all.
  • A horse stops because it does not want to jump, think why?
  • There are many reasons: sore, unhappy, frightened, too hard!
  • Horses are like athlete’s they need lots of TLC more so than us humans because they cannot tell you what’s wrong, we need to be very receptive and know when it does not feel right or when they do not eat etc, and treat them to fix the problem!

What is your favourite showjumping event?  A Speed Class, but I mean a Table C type. This is the one I specifically like because I think it’s a real speed class. All riders are encouraged to travel quickly and have a good crack. If a rider has a rail it is not counted as 4 penalties, it is 4 seconds added onto your time at the end of the round. The other type of speed class named an A2 is when the rider encounters the 4 penalties so therefore a rider going quite slow but clean can beat a rider having a good go and having 1 easy fence down. LH Brittany was and still is the most talented horse for this class!

Do you have a favourite horse in your entire riding career? I would have to say LH Brittany, you can see pictures and read all about her on our web page www.lalshaven.com.au. This mare has been a once in a lifetime horse to have ridden and owned. My dad brought her as a 2 year old and I was only 11 years of age, yes I struggled and my dad rode her first for the first year but by the time I was 12 I could ride her in Pony Club competitions. LH Brittany has won many classes and is so honest and reliable not just on course but in every way to handle. She has made me look amazing and ” I OWE ALL MY SUCCESSES TO HER!”

What are your objectives for 2013? I would like to complete my 3rd year of Law/International Relations degree with good results and still be able to go home to the family farm and ride whatever horse dad says I can. I am lucky because my dad has always said he would have a horse for me to hop on either at home or at a show. I miss riding a lot and being too far in distance to travel home every day means riding is second in my life at the moment. But I do know nothing is forever and soon I can choose to ride and compete more often.

Do you have any Olympic or WEG ambitions? My parents have always said “, Your only as good as what you are sitting on”, and I am not sitting on anything often, so honestly I feel like every time I am able to compete at any event, even in the 75cm class that I am in a major big class, it gives me a huge amount of enjoyment just riding and jumping, Olympic or WEG ambitions are there in the 75cm class.

What are your favourite feeds to keep your horses in peak condition? I need to know that the feed I am giving my performance horses is of the very best quality. Barastoc is a particularly favourite brand of mine, as they have over 30 years of experience in formulating high quality, tailored nutritional solutions, Barastoc have created a range of products that to meet my horses individual needs throughout all stages of their competition life. In particular I like to use; Barastoc Groom, Barastoc Horse Block, Barastoc Cool Command, Barastoc Calm Performer, Equi-Jewel and Barastoc Competitor

Favourite holiday destination? At the very moment I would have to say Paris, I have been in Europe since early Jan 2013 and so far Paris has taken my breathe away!

You can have five people (anyone in the world) who would you have at a dinner party? Johnny Depp, Matt Damon, Audrey Hepburn, Oprah and my sister Sarah
