What is a Show Hunter? 

With Show Hunters being relatively new to the show world in Australia, it seems that we are still trying to tread water with regards as to what type a Show Hunter really is. Too often we hear that a Hack who is not good enough to qualify in the Open ring, can just be fattened up and this will make it a Show Hunter. This concept does nothing for the reputations of our Show Hunters. For me the most important facet of show horses is the word 'show'. The horse must still have the quality of a beautiful animal, it must still be desirable to look at, and must have the wow factor that a quality show horse has. 

What Makes Me Decide if My Horse is a Show Hack or Show Hunter? 

There are many guidelines for a Show Hunter. I always refer to these when making the decision; the horse should be of substantial bone, however the limbs should be straight and sound; a Show Hunter is expected to be able to travel over rough terrain and work all day and this can only be done on a sound limbed horse. Choosing a Show Hunter should not be all about the bone, the cannon bone should be short they should display strong, flat bone, large knees and hocks. I also like my Show Hunters to have good hindquarters and a lovely wide chest. I also like to see my Show Hunter move, so for me they must have an excellent shoulder with the neck coming high out of the wither, all of which will give you an excellent ride.

A Show Hunter is expected to be a pleasure to ride, and MUST be able to work and demonstrate excellent manners and education.

What is the Difference Between the Presentation of an Open Hack and a Show Hunter?

There is really no great difference other than the Show Hunter is more subdued, the makeup is more blended and less is often best. A Show Hunters quality should stand on its own. 

These days it's morse common for Show Hunters to display quartermarkers, but they should be more bold and workmen like, with larger checkers being more desirable than smaller checkers. Browbands should be plain leather, and the riders clothing and tack workmanlike, practical and clean.
