Top 10 for Both Kiwis after Day One in Kentucky

This article first appeared on the ESNZ website.

Jock Paget and Clifton Signature are the best of the Kiwis at the end of the first day of dressage at the Rolex Kentucky CIC4* Three Day Event in the United States.

Paget and Signature sit on 47.5 penalty points, with Tim Price and Bango two spots back in eighth equal on 48.3. Joe Meyer and Clip Clop were the only other Kiwis in action today and sit in 27th on 60.6. Meyer, wearing a smart tarten kilt, won one of two Dubarry of Ireland Best Dressed Awards at the first horse inspection yesterday.

Leading the field are 2015 winners Michael Jung (GER) and FischerRocana FST with 34.4, raining on the parade of the hosts who fill the next four spots.

ESNZ high performance eventing coach Erik Duvander said given the age and experience of the New Zealand horses at Kentucky, he was very happy. “It is about getting experience in performing in the environment here, which they both (Paget and Price) did well today,” said Duvander.

Today saw 35 of the 72-strong field complete the dressage phase. The remainder will go overnight, including former Kentucky winner Blyth Tait and Xanthus III and Sir Mark Todd on NZB Campino.
