CIC3*

William Fox-Pitt and Clifton Signature were successful in the CIC3* at Barbury International Horse Trials over the weekend, with the pair adding just 1.6 cross country time penalties to their score to finish on 42.3. Clifton Signature, formerly ridden by 2017 MI3DE winner Jock Paget, is for sale.

NZ’s Andrew Nicholson narrowly missed making it six in a row at Barbury, finishing second on his dressage score (43.9) with up and coming star Swallow Springs. Third place went to Oliver Townend with Note Worthy.

The only Australian in the field, Bill Levett, withdrew after the dressage with his horses Shannondale Titan and Lassban Diamond Lift. Lassban Diamond Lift topped the scoreboard in the dressage with a very impressive score of 36.1 (the only sub-40 score of the class), however Bill decided that due to the very firm ground he wouldn’t jump any of his rides at the event. In a blog on his website, he said: The ground was so firm that we thought it best not to run anything…Now Barbury is done and dusted for 2017 and hopefully we will have some rain soon meaning better running ground.” With such a fantastic dressage score in only his third 3* start, it will be exciting to see how Lassban Diamond Lift performs in the future!

Event Rider Masters (ERM) CIC3*

In the ERM CIC3* class, French combination Thomas Carlile and Upsilon were successful — adding just 1.6 cross country time penalties to their terrific dressage score to finish on 32.4. Andrew Nicholson again finished second, this time with his Badminton winning partner Nereo (41.5). Third went to Sir Mark Todd and Leonidas II.

Shane Rose and CP Qualified were the best placed Australians, finishing 11th on 60.7. Shane was a little disappointed with his dressage score of 44.3 and picked up 16.4 time penalties in the cross country phase. However, he received 16 ERM points and now sits 7th on the ERM leader board.

Other Australians in the field included Catherine Burrell and Duke (19th on 78.6), and Sammi Birch on The Court Jester. Sammi produced a great dressage score of 40.5 but withdrew before the jumping phases.
