What I Can’t Do Without: Brooke Somers Training Essentials

Balance Riding Tights 1 - Noble Outfitters

Brooke Somers started riding literally before she was born — her mum, a dressage rider, rode throughout her pregnancy. “It’s pretty safe to say I was destined to be on a horse,” Brooke laughs.

Brooke has a background as a showjumper and eventer, and more recently gained her racehorse trainer’s licence, which she cites as her biggest equestrian achievement, along with breaking a class record with her first win on the track. She runs Somerstone Thoroughbreds with partner Mark Stoneham.

Like anyone, Brooke loves to win, but continual improvement and being a “good citizen” in the horse world are just as important. “The best thing about competing and racing is proving to yourself that you can improve, even in small steps,” she says. “It’s nice to win, but, better manners, quicker times, stronger finishes and good comments from judges are all signs you and your horse are headed in the right direction.”

Like many equestrian professionals, Brooke lives and breathes horses. She jokes that her biggest achievement outside horses is “Managing to keep Mark from leaving me because I spend all my time in the barn!”

Even in her “spare time,” Brooke says she looks at pictures of horses, watches videos of horses, talks to people about horses and searches for new horses to buy.

Is she addicted? Yes … Brooke says she should probably adopt the hashtag #horsesarelife as her new motto!

We asked Brooke to share her “must have” essentials to make getting up at the crack of dawn to train racehorses that little bit easier and to help her eventing horses soar over a cross country course.

Brooke Somers Highlights - Noble Outfitters

1. Wave Fork, Noble Outfitters, $80 (Assembled)
“It’s a revolution in cleaning. When you clean more than one stable, you need a good fork that’s light and has even prongs. Nothing falls through or over the side of the Wave Fork.”

2. Ashley Performance Shirt in Periwinkle, Noble Outfitters, $89.95
“UV protection is a must for me and the long sleeves with powermesh inserts keep me cool in the heat (and keep the flies off!). I’ve had some of my Ashley shirts for over 12 months and they still looks as good as the day I got them.”

3. On The Bit Bracelet in Vivacious, Noble Outfitters, $34.95
“These leather bracelets are cute and come in an array of colours. They’re designed by a female master saddler, which gets my tick of approval.

4. Premier Fleece Vest in Dark Navy, Noble Outfitters, $119.95
“This vest is perfect for track work. It fits comfortable over my safety vest and is a great layering piece to stay warm.”

5. Perfect Fit Gloves in Confetti/Periwinkle, Noble Outfitters, $44.95
“These awesome gloves are still going strong after months of riding track work on eight horses a day. Talk about durability!”

6. Balance Riding Tights in Navy, Noble Outfitters, $119.95
“These are the ultimate. The phone pocket is essential for me because my phone rings constantly.”

7. MUDS Stay Cool Women’s High, Noble Outfitters, $139.95
“Mud and cold are no match for these bad boys! These boots are super comfy and warm.”

8. Fleece Over Reach Boots in Black, Toptac International, $39.95
“These over reach boots are fantastic for cross country — they don’t slip or turn, and the faux fleece means they dry almost straight away.”

9. Fleece Tendon Boots in Black, Toptac International, $59.95
“Again, these boots are just too easy — they’re stylish and go through water with no dramas.”

10. Carr & Day & Martin, Mane & Tail Conditioner, Equimist, $44.95
“The spray is almost silent, which is awesome for horses who don’t like spray noises. The product itself unsticks the stickiest tails and adds gleam. My horses do not race without it.”
