Cathryn Herbert & Wimborne Constable win Tamworth CCI4*S

By Equestrian Life

Tamworth International Eventing took place over the weekend at the Australian Equine & Livestock Event Centre, with Cathryn Herbert and 15-year-old stallion Wimborne Constable taking out the Double R CCI4*S.

By Contenda out of Wimborne Paint it Black (Gribaldi), Wimborne Constable was bred by veterinarian Dr Justine Donohoe of Wimborne Park Stud in 2008. Speaking previously to Equestrian Life, Cathryn said that apparently he was “a bit of a small foal”, but owners Kylie and Philip Ewart saw his potential early on and subsequently purchased him as a yearling.

“They just really liked the way he moved and were really interested in his sire, Contenda. Kylie’s a vet herself and they were setting up a boutique stud, Mallyon Hills Warmblood Stud, and they wanted a stallion to front it. So they purchased him… originally as a dressage horse.” Wimborne Constable was started under saddle and eventually found his way to Heath Ryan, who was tasked with continuing the stallion’s education.

“Heath really, really rated him,” recalled Cathryn of the early days when Wimborne Constable arrived at Ryans Horses, where she was working at the time. “He proved himself in the competition arena and went up through the grades with ease. It went from there… Heath convinced Philip and Kylie to let him continue producing Constable up to the top levels of eventing and dressage.”

Base at Ryans Horses for five years, Cathryn took over the reins of the stallion in mid-2021. Their first international-level four-star win came at Wallaby Hill in 2022 – and this win at Tamworth is their second to date.

Posting a dressage score of 26.9, the pair led throughout with just cross country time faults added to their score. They finished on 36.1, ahead of Jessica Rae and Rascal on 45.5, and Emma Mason with KPH Kingfisher on 47.2.

The Britt Grovenor Photography CCI3*S was won by Andrew Barnett and Oscar Park Deluge on 31.6, while the Gundy Park Equine CCI2*S went to Emma Bishop and Cassilis Park Figaro on 30.8.

In the national-level classes, Holly Anderson and TW Great One won the Sue Grills Racing CCN1*S (A) on 33.5, while Shenae Lowings and Chupa Chup won the An Eventful Life CCN1*S (B) on an impressive 21.5.
