Do your horsey phrases confuse your non-horsey friends?

By Equestrian Life

Have you ever brought your non-horsey friend along to the stables, only to have them watch on in bewilderment as you talk horses with a fellow rider? Do you struggle to explain horsey concepts to a partner who doesn’t know fetlocks from forelocks? Do your work colleagues think you’re speaking a different language when you begin to answer the question “What did you do on the weekend?”

As horse owners, we use certain phrases day in, day out - often without thinking twice about how they may sound to the non-horsey observer. Here, we ask a non-horsey friend to translate a couple of commonly used sentences….

1. “My horse’s frogs are soft.”

My horse stepped on his reptilian paddock friends.

2. “He goes well in a snaffle.”

My horse has mastered the art of blowing his nose.

3. “My horse is scouring.”

My horse is incredibly pissed off….

4. “I have to clean my gelding’s sheath.”

I need to clean my horse’s finest clothing.

5. “My horse won’t stop napping.”

My horse enjoys his sleep.

6. “That horse looks green.”

7. “My horse tends to pigroot a lot.”

8. “Did you see my flying change?”

Did you see my horse switch feet mid air?

9. “Check out that impressive passage.”

Out on a trail ride when you come across a nice passage, tunnel or bridge.

10. “That horse needs to be more forward.”

He doesn’t impress the ladies quickly enough.
