Do you know what’s between your horse and the road?

When you’re driving down the highway at 100 kilometres per hour with your horse in tow, you want to travel safe in the knowledge that what lies between your equine friend and the road has been built to last.

Based in Normandy, France, Theault is famous worldwide for creating innovative equine transport solutions and has developed horseboxes and horse trucks that are more reliable, more practical, more comfortable, and safer than ever. It all comes down to Theault’s craftmanship and know-how; from the welding and carpentry to upholstery and paint, each horsebox has been created with the knowledge gleaned from 97 years in the industry. All vehicles are manufactured in Theault’s Normandy factory, where 450 horseboxes are produced each year thanks to 1,900 hours of design and innovation, coupled with 37,500 hours of labour.

The manufacturing process encompasses three main stages: assembly, painting and finishing. During the assembly stage, the platform cab chassis is modified to suit specifications – including the addition of a rotproof polyester floor to support the aluminium structure of the vehicle. Theault’s bulkheads (the wall between the horsebox and the driver’s cabin) are installed at this point; these have been created using the latest generation welding robot and are designed to protect both horse and human in the event of an accident.

Carpentry is an artisanal skill preserved at Theault, and woodworking is used for fitting out not only the cabins of light vehicles (such as the Proteo Switch and its luxury counterpart, the Morpheo) but also for the luxurious interior living spaces of the Elegance horse truck. Theault’s carpentry workshop is also responsible for cutting the foam designed for use in doors, gates and ramps. Upholstery – whether it be fabric or leather – is also performed in-house to ensure quality.

When it comes to painting the options are virtually endless, with 120 options to choose from in addition to the choice of either a matte, gloss, glittery or iridescent finish. Theault’s artwork specialists can also assist with customised logo or image-based designs. Finally, once the horsebox reaches the finishing stage, it’s time for the team to apply the final touches to meet the customer’s needs and then rigorous testing is carried out before the horsebox leaves the factory.

Theault’s standard of excellence is such that in 2019 it received the ‘Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant’ label by the French Government, a distinction for French companies with excellent industrial and artisanal know-how. It allows Theault to proudly fly France’s colours around the world; the brand is currently represented in 18 countries, including Australia.

In short, Theault has one goal: to build you the most reliable, safe and comfortable horsebox with a premium finish. What more could you want between your horse and road.

Backed by 97 years of craftmanship and innovation, Theault’s transport solutions are the ultimate choice when travelling with horses – and they are available right here in Australia. To find out more about the Proteo Switch and Theault’s range of other vehicles, please click here.
