Lucy Johnston recognised for outstanding achievement at Pony Club Australia Awards

Lucy Johnston is the kind of Pony Club member every club dreams of having — dedicated, kind, reliable, and always ready to lend a helping hand. Her ongoing commitment to her club, Midlands Pony Club (MPC), Tasmania, and to the Pony Club movement as a whole has seen her named the 2025 Pony Club Australia Best Achievement by a Rider Aged 13–17, proudly sponsored by Ranvet.

Throughout 2024, Lucy attended almost every rally and camp held by her club, earning 100% attendance — the only rallies she missed were those that clashed with competitions where she was representing MPC. Her enthusiasm for Pony Club is infectious, and her clubmates describe her as their biggest cheerleader. Whether someone needs help on the ground, a borrowed horse, or just a word of encouragement, Lucy is always the first to step in.

Her support extends well beyond her home club. Even when she’s not competing, Lucy can be found volunteering, photographing events, or cheering on her friends. At the 2025 Pony Club Tasmania State Dressage and Show Jumping Championships, she not only achieved excellent results but also organised and led the club’s musical ride, lent a horse to another member, and supported a group of first-time state competitors. Earlier in the year, she attended both the Northern Games and Pony Club Chukka Champs as a volunteer and photographer, once again demonstrating her commitment to the broader Pony Club community.

New horses, new challenges

Lucy’s approach to riding is as diligent as her approach to leadership. Taking on a new young horse this year brought challenges, including an injury that prevented her from qualifying for certain events. Yet, true to form, Lucy took the setback in stride, using the experience as a learning opportunity and sharing her insights with younger members. She continues to train regularly under MPC’s coaches, exemplifying that Pony Club learning extends well beyond rallies.

Her leadership journey has flourished too. After completing her Pony Club Australia Leadership Certificate in 2023/24 — a project that saw her create practical resources to help members prepare for their C, C* and K certificates — Lucy became a Trainee Preliminary Coach under the PCA National Coaching Program. She now helps to mentor riders and nurture a culture of teamwork and participation across all levels.

As Co-Club Captain alongside Hanna Bailey, Lucy has helped foster a warm and inclusive environment at rallies and camps. Together, they’ve created memorable activities such as a Hobby Horse Competition and a Colour Group Challenge Day designed to celebrate riders of all abilities. Lucy also led the MPC contingent at the Northern Zone Dressage and Show Jumping Championships, where her example of teamwork and sportsmanship contributed to the club winning the inaugural Marissa Hall Spirit Award — a true reflection of her leadership and club values.

Legendary generosity

Lucy’s generosity is legendary. This year alone, she lent her horses to members whose ponies were injured, ensuring no one missed out on the joy of riding. She models resilience and compassion, showing her peers how to stay positive through setbacks and celebrate one another’s achievements.

In every way, Lucy Johnston embodies the Pony Club spirit — learning, leadership, friendship, and horsemanship. Her authenticity, empathy, and unrelenting enthusiasm make her not only a deserving award recipient but also an outstanding ambassador for Pony Club Australia.
