The Equestrian’s Inner Life, a podcast hosted by Pernille Hogg, explores the unseen journey of riders. Launched in October 2025 with an episode featuring six-time Olympian Mary Hanna, followed by chats with Brett Parbery, classical master Rafael Soto, and American Olympian Steffen Peters among others, it delves into connection, resilience, and the transformative bond between horse and human.
Ep.6. Beyond the Arena: Five Olympics and a Lifetime of True Horsemanship
From the green pastures of New Zealand to the great arenas of Europe, Bruce Goodin’s journey is one of quiet strength, enduring passion, and the kind of horsemanship that stands the test of time.
A five-time Olympian now based in Sweden, Bruce has dedicated his life to the art of showjumping — a path shaped by countless horses, each one a teacher, each one deepening his understanding of balance, respect, and the lifelong equestrian journey.
Through triumphs and trials, including serious injury, Bruce has shown what true resilience looks like — returning again and again to the saddle with the same calm focus and unwavering love for the horse that first set him on this path.
In her conversation with Bruce, Pernille explores not only the great moments of sport, but the subtler lessons — the ones that live between the fences, in the feel, and in the quiet dialogue that happens when we learn to listen.

The horse that changed his career
When Bruce Goodin first met the horse who would change his career, nothing went quite as expected. Fresh off a long journey from the Netherlands to England, Reservation hadn’t done much work and Bruce decided to keep things simple — just a quiet hack to let him settle in.
But curiosity got the better of him, and before long he found himself popping over a small fence, just to feel what a real Grand Prix horse might be like. What followed was anything but polished: a hot, powerful horse, sideways strides, clumsy jumps, and a moment where Bruce thought, ‘Oh dear, I might be in trouble here’.
Yet that very beginning marked the start of an extraordinary partnership. Within a year, the pair were competing at the highest level — finishing second behind Big Ben in the Grand Prix at the Spruce Meadows Masters in Calgary, one of the most prestigious and competitive events in the world. From an uncertain first ride to standing among the legends of the sport at just 21 years old, Bruce’s story is a beautiful reminder that greatness often begins in the most unexpected moments.
