Sitting second after dressage on 32.5 penalties, Andrew Barnett and the off-the-track Thoroughbred Chasing Great delivered fault-free jumping rounds in the Boonoona Design CCI4-S*, adding only 8.8 time penalties on cross country – the fastest round of the day – to secure the win on a final score of 41.3.
“I had a great weekend at Quirindi Eventing and would like to thank the hardworking committee for running such a well-organised event,” says Andrew. “I was delighted with Chasing Great, who produced a strong performance to win our first four-star together. He continues to improve across all phases, and I am very pleased with his progress. I look forward to building on this momentum through the remainder of the season.”
Previously ridden by Shenae Lowings and Monica Spencer, Chasing Great is owned by the Barlow family. The victory marks another Quirindi success for Barnett, who also won the CCN4*-S at the venue in April aboard Oscar Park Deluge.
Second place went to Emma Mason and KPH Kingfisher on 53.8, while Oliver Barrett finished on the podium in third with Sandhills Gem on 64.7. Both combinations jumped double clear, adding only cross country time penalties to their dressage scores.
Barrett did take the early lead after the dressage in the CCI4*S with Sandhills Briar on a score of 29.3. However, 20 jumping penalties on cross country saw them slip to seventh place by the end of the competition.
In the Bundella Station CCI3-S*, Olympian Stuart Tinney claimed victory with Caruso, leading throughout and finishing on 36.9 after adding 9.2 time penalties to his dressage score.
The Quirindi Plumbing CCI2-L* went to junior rider Liam Mackenzie-Smith and Sandhills Invader on 35.9, while Charlie Richardson and VH Wingman won the Quirindi Plumbing CCN1-L* on 28.9.
