Six-year-old KWPN licensed dressage stallion Osaka has landed in Australia and has join Jessica Dertell’s stable after being purchased by her parents Kate and Doyle Dertell in partnership with Luke and Sarah Wells Smith of Motion Equine Centre.

The Dutch warmblood is by Escolar out of elite preference mare Capri P (by Florencio x Jazz x Ulft) and was bred by Pegasus Stales in Bentelo, The Netherlands. The Dertells and Luke and Sarah Wells Smith purchased him from Joop Van Uytert after a long search for the right horse with the help of Jeff and Annemieke Vincourt Krom.

The Dertells revealed on 23 February that Osaka had left quarantine and arrived at their property in Victoria – however with Jess at Willinga Park for Dressage by the Sea, it was a few days before she could begin working with the stallion.

“Osaka is a pleasure to work with already,” says Jess of her first day with the stallion. “He has so much natural ability and raw talent that I look forward to shaping into the future. I can’t wait for everyone to see him he’s a real showstopper and a complete powerhouse.”

As reported by EuroDressage, Osaka was licensed at the 2022 KWPN stallion licensing and passed the 2022 KWPN Spring Stallion Performance Testing with 82.5 points (7.5 for walk, 8.5 for trot, 8.5 for canter). From December 2023, Chiel van Bedaf began riding the stallion and competed in the Subli Competition for Young Dressage Horses up to M2 level.

Jess and her other KWPN stallion Kilimanjaro enjoyed success at Dressage by the Sea over the weekend, winning the CDI-Y Team and Individual tests with 70%+ scores and placing second in the CDI-Y Freestyle. Jess was rapt with the horse’s performance at Willinga Park.

“Manny was super! It was a shame about the tension on the last day [in the Freestyle] but overall, I was so happy!” she says.

Jess told Equestrian Life earlier this month that Kilimanjaro is certainly one for the future and not far off Grand Prix. We look forward to watching Jess’ journey with both stallions – as well as the rest of her talented team!
