The Board of Equestrian Australia (EA) has announced the resignation of Sam Jones as CEO.

“On behalf of the Board of Equestrian Australia, I would like to thank Sam for her significant contribution to the organisation and our sport,” said Equestrian Australia Chair Zac Miles in an announcement to EA members.

“Before her appointment as CEO, Sam served as Acting CEO and during her tenure with EA she has worked to strengthen the organisation, taking on considerable challenges. I would particularly highlight Sam’s service to our members and the equestrian community at large. We wish her well for the future.”

“I want to thank everyone who has supported me during my time with EA,” said Sam Jones, who recently informed the Board of her intention to leave Equestrian Australia in September 2025. “The organisation has a committed and capable team, and I’m proud to have been part of their efforts to support the sport and its community. I remain committed to a smooth and professional transition and will work with the EA team and Chair to support the handover.”

Sam Jones began as acting CEO for EA in July 2024, and was officially appointed to the role in December 2024.

Interim CEO appointed

Equestrian Australia says it will immediately commence a comprehensive search for a permanent CEO. In the interim, the Board has appointed experienced sports administrator Ben Houston as Acting CEO, effective 1 August 2025.

Mr Houston has more than 20 years of experience in sports leadership and corporate governance roles, and was most recently the CEO of Sailing Australia. He has been President of the Commonwealth Games Australia Board since 2018.

Zac Miles said he is pleased to announce Mr Houston’s appointment at what is an important time for the organisation. “After significant consideration, the Board wanted to move forward with Ben’s appointment as interim CEO immediately to ensure a smooth transition from Sam for the organisation and the EA team.

“As well as a strong pedigree leading national sports organisations, Ben brings an ideal blend of corporate, legal and governance experience to EA. He is committed to moving swiftly in seeking to understanding of the views of stakeholders across Australia’s equestrian community.”

From Sailing to Equestrian

Ben Houston comes with extensive experience in sports administration and is the President of Commonwealth Games Australia. Most recently Mr Houston was CEO of Sailing Australia, and in the past has also been the Director and President of Triathlon Australia and a Director of the Australian Association of National Advertisers. Mr Houston also has extensive legal and corporate governance experience, including more than two decades as Senior Associate at Ashurst Lawyers and Supervising Counsel at Telstra.

The incoming interim CEO said he is excited about the opportunity to help build on the work of the EA Board, management and team in strengthening the organisation: “We want to harness our rich history, community connection and passionate membership base to support the growth and sustainability of equestrian sport in Australia.”
