Vale Margaret McIver, Australia's first Olympic dressage rider

By Equestrian Life

The Australian equestrian community is mourning the loss of Olympic trailblazer Margaret McIver, age 86.

Margaret was Australia's very first Olympic dressage rider, competing in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, riding the thoroughbred CK and finishing 42nd.

Before taking up dressage, she was involved in showjumping and eventing and was a regular face at Melbourne Royal, especially with her show jumper Bonanza. Competing at the highest level of eventing, she placed second in the Open class at Melbourne with Pyewacket in the 1970s.

Margaret lived in Ballarat and was married to the late Ken McIver. In 2007, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Ballarat in recognition of her contribution to dressage in Australia — not only a trailblazing rider, we she was also a terrific coach and dressage judge, and served on many event organising committees. Margaret is also an honorary life member of Equestrian Australia.

EQ Life extends our deepest condolences to Margaret's family.
