The Audi Q7 once again demonstrated its superiority in a highly competitive segment when it was crowned Best Luxury SUV over $80,000 in Drive’s annual Car of the Year awards.

The celebrated awards are considered amongst the most important in the country, with vehicles exhaustively tested and evaluated for performance, safety, appointment, fit and finish and practicality.

As the reigning champion in the Luxury SUV class, the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI was again the benchmark against which the opposition was judged, and again, the large SUV’s combination of power, refinement and advanced technology proved too potent for the newcomers.

So what features won the judges over?

* The power. The Q7 offers effortless performance due to the generous 200kW of power and 600Nm of torque, and “feels fleet footed when you unleash the engine”.

* A comfortable and controlled ride. The optional air suspension meant the Q7 “felt at ease absorbing bumps in the road” and was described as “how air suspension should be done.”

* A very spacious cabin. The Q7 was described as having “good room for occupants in all three rows of seating”.

* A great infotainment system. Known as MMI, the infotainment system was praised for being an “intuitive and easy-to-use system”.

* Very economical. The Q7 uses 6.0-litres per 100km on average.
