Subzero and his handler Graham Salisbury have been nominated for the Australian of the Year awards.

The 1992 Melbourne Cup winner has spent two decades visiting schools, nursing homes and hospitals in his role as Racing Victoria’s ambassador.

Racing personality Bruce Clark confirmed the nominations of Subzero and Salisbury applauding those who had helped secure the nomination.

Known affectionately as ‘Subbie’, he is know as a national treasure. Hall of Fame trainer Lee Freedman, who prepared the 1992 Melbourne Cup winner, has been a strong campaigner for Subzero’s nomination for many years.

Most horses don’t live beyond Subzero’s age and only two years ago he fell quite ill. Now it is his best mate who is struggling with his health, with the former clerk of the course earlier this year being admitted to hospital due to cancer.

In 2014, the racing industry honoured Subzero with induction into the Hall Of Fame.
Just days out from his 30th birthday, it seems about right that Subbie and his great mate get the recognition they so richly deserve.
