A relaxed Gold Trip was the key to the French import being able to land his first Australian victory in the nation’s greatest race, the Melbourne Cup.

Winning rider Mark Zahra praised the entire’s ability to conserve his energy in a genuinely run Cup, where he had him positioned in clear galloping room beyond midfield.

“I just had spent nothing until the half-mile,” Zahra said. “I clicked him up a couple of times to maintain a three-wide line, I just spent nothing until I went for him.” The Western Australia-born jockey didn’t properly go for Gold Trip until before the 400m and while the response was instant, there were a few things that he was still conscious of.
