Aussie riders shine at Special Olympics World Games

Following a week of competition at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany, the Australian equestrian team have finished with an impressive haul of medals.

Karen Messmer (16), from Rockhampton; Oliver King (15) from Brisbane; Jaye Barnesby-Buie (20) from Perth; and Isabella Parisi (23) from the Gold Coast were some of the youngest on the Aussie team and it was their first World Games appearance. In fact, Oliver King (QLD) was the youngest Australian competitor at the World Games, and it was hist first overseas trip.

All three riders competed on borrowed horses, with Isabella riding ‘Nike’, Karen and Oliver both riding ‘Fanny', and Jaye riding Querida-Quamira.

 

Jaye Barnesby-Buie and Querida-Quamira claimed bronze in the the Level A Dressage (D04) with a score of 70.6%.

The Australian equestrian team finished with four gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.

The results from our Australian team at the Special Olympics World Games are:

Level B (I) Dressage (D06): Gold, 74.118%

Level B (I) English Equitation (D07): Fifth, 62.5%

Level B (I) English Working Trail (D06): Gold (equal), 88%

Karen Messmer, 16, Rockhampton

Horse: Fanny

Level B (I) Dressage (D06): Silver, 72.647%

Level B (I) English Equitation (D07): Bronze, 67.5%

Level B (I) English Working Trail (D07): Gold, 88%

Oliver King, 15, Brisbane

Horse: Fanny

Level B (I) Dressage (D05): Bronze, 73.236%

Level B (I) English Equitation (D06): Silver, 76.25%

Level B (I) English Working Trail (D06): Gold (equal), 88%

Jaye Barnesby-Buie, 20, Perth

Horse: Querida-Quamira

Level A Dressage (D04): Bronze, 70.6%

Level A English Equitation: fourth, 72.222%

Level A Equitation Jumping: silver, 72.5%
