Equestrian events at the Virtus Global Games begin today in Vichy, France, with the Australian team set to compete this evening our time.

The Australian team includes Andrew Driffield from Scone, NSW; Sarah Sherwood from Tallebudgera Valley, QLD; and Sui Watts from Mitchell Island, NSW.

Following an amazing fundraising effort led by Mary Nitschke and Heath Ryan and supported by the wider Australian equestrian community, the team was able to raise the money required to travel to France and represent our country on the world stage. Now, it’s competition time!

All three riders are on borrowed horses, with Sarah and Sui sharing a horse. Their start times are as follows:

Andrew Driffield and Volpino (who stands at 18hh) are competing at 7pm AEST.

Sarah Sherwood and Bonni are competing at 7.54pm AEST.

Sui Watts and Bonni are competing at 10.36pm AEST.

The sixth edition of the Virtus Global Games, the world’s largest elite sports event for athletes with an intellectual impairment, began on 4 June in Vichy, France and runs through to 10 June. Thousands of athletes from Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania will perform across ten main sports – and this year, an equestrian division has been included.

The competition is live streamed and can be accessed here.

Equestrian Life wishes Andrew, Sarah and Sui the very best of luck!
