Carl Hester has made his competitive debut on the stunning chestnut mare Brioso II. After scoring 78% in the Prix St Georges at an event in early April, followed by 82% in the PSG at Hartpury at the end of April, she’s no doubt a horse to watch!
“Although I thought I never wanted a chestnut mare, I love this one! 82% in the PSG for Brioso — a bright future ahead…” said Carl via his Facebook page following the Hartpury event.
The mare (Benetton Dream x Dimaggio) was previously competed with success by Charlotte Dujardin. Back in 2017 when they won the Medium Championship at the NAF Winter Dressage Championships, Charlotte explained in a British Dressage article how the mare was discovered.

“A friend of Carl’s, Caroline Dawson, rang him and said there was a horse with good blood lines which he should look at. He sent someone along and she [Brioso] passed so he bought her. She was a just-backed five year old so was a bit behind in her training but she’s proving to be a proper ‘rough diamond’. I’d certainly say that she has the talent for GP.”
According to the FEI database, Brioso was bred by Nicole Nelson and 50/50 co-owned by Charlotte Duajrdin and Andrew Fletcher.
With Carl and Brioso’s current PSG success and very impressive scores, it’s starting to look like Charlotte could be right!
