China’s eventing star, Alex Hua Tian, has posted a Facebook advert seeking horses for his 2020 Tokyo Olympic campaign.

Alex was China’s first Olympic eventing rider, and was the youngest Olympian eventer when he contested the 2008 Olympics in Beijing at just 18 years of age. At the Rio Olympics in 2016, Alex and Don Geniro finished in eighth place.

Alex needs a better selection of horses leading up to Tokyo, and as such the Chinese Equestrian Association is offering to pay for the horses’ upkeep in the lead up to the Games.

Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Alex explains that his advert is targeting western owners with top horses. He hopes that in offering better odds of making the Olympics as part of the Chinese team (instead of the British team where this is around 150 top horses vying for selection), owners will be willing to move a horse to China. In terms of Chinese owners, they are looking at those who may have the funds to buy a top horse (as there are currently few in China who already own elite eventers.)

Alex currently has a number of horses in his stable, including PSH Convival with whom he won bronze at the Asian Games in Jakarta last year.
