Dressage on the Downs with Gary Lung
By Ally Doumany
Dressage filled the Dalby Indoor Arena in August as Gary Lung, Brisbane-based dressage rider and coach, travelled out west to teach an enthusiastic group of riders.
This was the first time Gary had travelled to Dalby, and the two-day clinic was made up of 23 lessons, which presented a great opportunity for riders from the Western Downs region and certainly kept Gary busy. Organised by local rider Stephanie Commens and hosted by the Dalby Active Riders Club the clinic was subsidised by the EQ Sport Development Funding Program.
Dalby, 200km west of Brisbane, is a thriving rural centre, known for its rich cropping country, campdrafting scene and annual Stock Horse Sale, but dressage and equestrian sports have a growing following in the region. The clinic saw not only dressage riders, but eventing and show horse competitors make the most of the opportunity to ride under Gary’s guidance.
Dalby’s well set up showgrounds and indoor arena make it the closest equestrian centre for many riders in southern and western Queensland, with some driving hundreds of kilometres to reach training days and competitions. This clinic was no exception, with riders travelling from as far away as Taroom and Tara for lessons.
The feedback from all the riders was overwhelmingly positive, with everyone taking some valuable insights and exercises home to work on. And despite the freezing wind, Gary enjoyed his visit too, and will be coming back again for more clinics.
A big thank-you to Equestrian Queensland, who partially funded the clinic under the EQ Sport Development Funding Program. Every bit of assistance helps for regional riders, who do not always have access to regular coaching, and everyone was grateful for the support.
And a huge thank you to Gary Lung, for travelling west and sharing his invaluable insights and knowledge. Everyone is looking forward to the next clinic.
