Chris Waller trained his second Caulfield Cup winner in three years as British import Durston caused a minor upset to win Australia’s premier 2400-metre handicap on Saturday.
Michael Dee rode his first Caulfield Cup winner in guiding Durston ($18) to victory, arriving in time to deny topweight Gold Trip ($16) a second career win in the $5 million event by a short neck.
“I don’t really know how to describe it, it’s unbelievable, I’ve just got to thank Chris Waller and Durston. I’m just ecstatic,” Dee said.
Durston incredibly only gained a berth in the race as first emergency following the race-day morning scratching of Maximal.
The Northern Hemisphere six-year-old started his career in Britain for David Simcock and the diminutively built but athletic stayer showed promise by winning two of eight starts before joining Ciaron Maher and David Eustace in Melbourne.
After requiring a period of injury rehabilitation, Durston won his second start for Maher and Eustace during last year’s Caulfield Cup carnival.
But he was then transferred to Waller at the start of this year and his spring campaign has returned wins in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m), Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) and G1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
Congratulations to all involved with Durston and the Highclere Racing Group.
