As horse owners, we tend to spend more time and money on our horses’ manes than our own. Between work and a somewhat social life, we don’t have much time for making ourselves look pretty. We do, however, spend hours brushing our horses’ tails!

THERE ARE A few tips and tricks that I have learnt along the way to keep my locks as healthy as possible. A good shampoo and conditioner is paramount. I love Natures Organics, which you can purchase from major supermarkets. Bonus is, it’s environmentally friendly and well price-pointed.

While my hair is still wet I use a treatment. My favourite is the Eleven Miracle Hair Treatment. It keeps my hair shiner and protects it from the wind and sun. Hair is most fragile when wet, so avoid excessive brushing or combing until it’s almost dry. Using a good quality brush is also important. Using brushes made of natural fibres are much softer on your hair and help prevent spilt ends. Avoid using the hottest setting on your hair dryer, as it can be damaging.

Helmet hair is another issue I’m sure you’re all familiar with. When riding before work, it’s not always viable to wash your hair every morning. That’s where a good dry shampoo and hair deodoriser will be your new best friend! Dry shampoo absorbs oils from the scalp, leaves the hair refreshed and smelling nice, and adds volume to your hair. A hair deodoriser is great for a freshen-up during summer when you tend to sweat more.

Tying your hair in a low bun or ponytail with a crease-free hair elastic will save you time as you won’t need to straighten or blow-wave out the bumps.

Another on-trend hairstyle is two Dutch braids with a centre part. Google ‘Kim Kardashian Braids’ to see what I mean!

By following a few of these simple tips, your mane will be just as soft and shiny as your horses!
