One of the last Lighthorse soldiers in Tasmania has passed away after spending a long life being involved with his Troop.

Ron Walters joined the Wynyard Lighthorse Troop of the 22nd Lighthorse Regiment at the age of 19 early in WW2.

Ron served first in Tasmania and then on the mainland in 1942 when the regiment was dismounted and converted to universal carriers and then served out 32 years in the Australian Army.

For the last 30 years, Ron has been a patron of the Tasmanian Lighhorse and served as President of the 22nd Lighthorse and Motor Regiment Association for many years

In a post on its Facebook page, the Tasmanian Lighthorse paid tribute to Ron, saying, “It is with deep sadness that the Troop would make known that our patron Ron Walters passed away last night [25th March].”

“His knowledge, humour and advice will be deeply missed, and the Troop’s collective sympathies go out to his wife and sons.”
