An Australian polo team is contesting this year’s British Open Polo Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup, with Scone Polo Club International already notching up two wins at the prestigious UK tournament.

The team, comprised of Scone-born David Paradice, US-born Matias Gonzalez and Argentines Adolfo Cambiaso and Adolfo ‘Poroto’ Cambiaso Jnr, won their first game on 27 June against the Vikings (11-5) – although with Adolfo Cambiaso unfortunately injured in the first chukka, fellow Argentine Tomas Panelo stepped in for the remainder of that match.

Scone again won on 30 June in their second match against BP Polo (14-11), before Talandracus got the upper hand against them in their third match (7-13) on 7 July.

Today (10 July), all eyes are on Scone Polo Club International as they line up against Marques de Riscal for their fourth and final qualifying match at 3pm local time (midnight AEST).

Bringing an additional touch of Aussie charm to Cowdray this year is Scone’s latest sponsor, Driza-Bone. A renowned Australian brand, Driza-Bone embodies rugged durability and timeless style; known for exceptional outerwear that withstands the harshest conditions with unwavering resilience, there’s no doubt Scone Polo Club International will be channelling these attributes as they take to the field against Marques de Riscal.

About the tournament

The British Open Polo Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup is the premier polo tournament in Europe at 22-goal (High Goal) level. In polo, players are rated on a handicap scale from minus 2 to 10 goals, with High Goal tournaments requiring teams to have an appropriate aggregate ranking – meaning these tournaments attract the top players and therefore the top horses. Scone Polo Club International’s team includes two 9-goal players in Adolfo Cambiaso and his son.

There are fifteen teams across three leagues (Scone is in League C) contesting the qualifying rounds, with the top eight ranked teams moving through to the Quarter Finals.

Equestrian Life wishes Scone Polo Club International the best of luck in their final qualifying match!
