Australian racing legend Chautauqua, who has collected almost 9 million in prize money throughout his career is refusing to bounce out of the barriers.
The 8 year old Australian racehorse who is trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes has failed to leave the stalls for a number of barrier trials earlier this year. He has since been spelled, but is now back for one last crack.
American horse trainer Monty Roberts has claimed that he is willing to assist working with Chautauqua, so long as they meet his demands – since it would mean an international trip.
The 86 year old horse whisperer is adamant that he can resurrect Chautauqua’s career, or at least get him jumping out the start gates. Monty Roberts assisted Hong Kong trainer Tony Cruz with the unpredictable Pakistan Star, who famously stopped half way through the Premier Plate in 2017.
The Hawkes team have declined Roberts’ offer.
Racing New South Wales stewards have told trainer John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes that the racing star will need to complete a series of trials if he is planning on running in the 1,200 meter Everest race.
Chautauqua has already refused to jump from the barriers five times this year and will potentially be permanently banned from Racing NSW if he fails to come out of his stall in the upcoming trial on Tuesday.
Trainers Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes are keen to get Chautauqua back to the top of his game as soon as possible, especially with the 1,200 meter Everest race fast approaching, which will run on the 13th of October, 2018 at the Randwick racecourse in Sydney. The race boasts a total price pool of $13 million dollars, with each horse having to pay a $600,000 entry fee to run.
