The CCI5* dressage phase is complete at the 2019 Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event, with Emma Bishop and CP Issey Miyake leading the field on a terrific score of 30.3 penalties.
They were the predicted winner by EquiRatings heading into the event, and this form has held true for at least the dressage phase. They had to contend with the challenge of being first out, but the pair produced a great test that was ultimately unable to be beaten.
Two-time Adelaide winners Hazel Shannon and Wilingapark Clifford were another combination tipped by EquiRatings to perform well. Second last to go, the pair produced a great test for 30.7 and second place, just a whisker behind Emma. This horse has a lovely elastic trot, however just gets a little tight in the canter. This did improve throughout the test and loosened up, and they showed lovely angles in the canter half pass and a good medium canter.
In third place is Sky’s Da Limit and Lauren Browne. They had a great entry and were ranked first with the live scoring after the first couple of movements, before going on to produce a nice consistent test. Lauren presented it really well, making full use of the trot work and holding the canter together well — which perhaps wasn’t as easy as it looked! A score of 31 will see them start tomorrow’s cross country less than 1 penalty off the leaders, which is a great effort.
Stuart Tinney rode Leporis, the youngest horse in the field at just eight years old, to fourth on the leaderboard. Commentator Spencer Sturmey felt that the horse needed to be a little higher in the poll for the bigger marks, but noted the gelding is a lovely horse that is just lacking a little bit of experience. Very exciting for the future! The canter was the strongest part of the test, and their score of 31.9 is seriously competitive — Stuart will be no doubt pleased!
Diane Gilder of New Zealand rode Your Attorney to fifth place at the pair’s first 5* event — a terrific effort. They began with a near perfect halt, showed super changes, and Diane was delighted with her test. They scored 33.9. This combination have been competing at international level for 8 years, and the strength of their partnership showed today.
Megan Jones and Kirby Park Impress were predicted as one of the main contenders, however their dressage test didn’t quite to plan. As Andrew Hoy explained during the live stream commentary, these two are capable of a sub-30 dressage score. A break in the medium trot and a couple of other little errors left them on 33.7 in sixth place — not as good as Megan might have hoped, but still well and truly in contention.
Amanda Pottinger and Just Kidding were next in seventh on 34.1. They were highly rated by the EquiRatings prediction centre and are certainly in contention with that score. The NZ combination produced a great test and Amanda presented a beautiful picture for the judges, really showing her experience.
Next came Jessica Grosmann and Belmont Backstage (34.6), Rebekah Italiano and ESB Irish Patience (34.7), Andrew Cooper and Reduction (35.7), Bundy Philpott and Tresca NZPH of NZ (35.7), Hamish Cargill and Legolas KPH (36.5), Jade Findlay and Oaks Cordelia (37.1), Tanya Schmidt and Laurentino (38.3), Sarah Clark and LV Balou Jeanz (38.5), Emily Gray and Jocular Vision (40.1), Madeline Wilson an Im Bruce (40.6), Michael Dagostino and Kinnordy Gatow (42.9) and Hayley Frielick on Class Action LP of NZ (43.6).

A mention has to go to Emily Gray of WA, as Jocular vision can be very tricky in the dressage. He’s capable of lovely work, but can also decide not to co-operate as he did last year at this event when it all came undone! Jocular Vision held it together until the final centerline where he showed his naughty side, however Emily was all smiles after the final halt with a big hug for the horse…. and a much-improved score compared to last year with 40.1 penalties. The crowd went wild, celebrating this combination’s personal success! A cross country machine, this places them in touch with the field and will make tomorrow an exciting day for Emily.
Michael Dagostino and Kinnordy Gatow also travelled all the way from Western Australia to contest their first 5* after winning a 4*L in the west earlier this year. This horse looks to be difficult to sit on, particularly in the trot work, however Michael looked pleased at the final halt and there was plenty of vocal encouragement from the crowd, which was great to see!
