Avoiding the Vet Bill Blues

So, you had to take your horse to the vet last week and now you’re terrified of checking the mail for fear of getting that dreaded invoice. When you finally do all you can think is, “packet noodles it is” and you are definitely not getting anyone Christmas presents this year.

Vet bills are something every horse owner is going to come across eventually. What you can’t know is when something is going to happen to your horse and how much it will cost you. So why are we so often unprepared?

We all tend to think ‘that won’t to happen to me’ but we forget that our 500kg friends are naturally very accident prone. Horses get around on 4 thin legs and the position of their eyes means that they can’t actually see where they are putting their hooves. They are also herd animals with very a strong fight or flight response which means that they are not the best logical thinkers in tricky situations. No matter how much bubble wrap you use, you simply can not guarantee your horse’s safety.

So how can you prepare for the worst? You could keep a money box in the cupboard or make a deposit to a savings account each month. You could live in your float to save on rent or sell that Olympic hopeful 2 year old sitting in the back paddock. Or you could consider Horse Insurance for your equine friend with annual premiums that are a fraction of the cost of the invoice you just opened.
