2022 FEI World Championship combination Shenae Lowings and Bold Venture have led from start to finish in the CCI4*S at Adelaide, surviving a hairy moment on the main arena to claim victory this afternoon on a score of 31.8.

The pair had three rails in hand after second-placed Andrew Cooper and Pepper Jack had a rail, but in the end they only needed one. A heart-stopping moment after one of the verticals saw the pair almost completely lose their footing, and it was a great save as Bold Venture regained his feet and took on the following oxer – just tipping one rail and accruing four faults.

“We both gave each other 100%,” said Shenae following her round. “He’s a true horse and a true partner.”

With the Paris 2024 Olympics just months away, Shenae is focused on making another Australian team. “That’s the dream; hopefully we’ll keep going and keep performing well. It would mean the world to me.”

'Hell On Wheels'

An off the track Thoroughbred who raced as Hell On Wheels, Bold Venture was also named VRC Best Performed Thoroughbred in the CCI4*S.

Shenae purchased ‘Bentley’ from a Facebook advertisement as a six-year-old sight unseen for $1000. He was very quirky to begin with and lived up to his racing name at times, with Shenae telling Equestrian Life previously that in the early days she was questioning what she’d bought: “I wasn’t sure what I had just purchased, but he had all the natural movement. When I did work with him, he seemed to switch on and it just seemed like he could be a really trainable horse.

“He became less and less quirky the more of a partnership we built. He definitely still has his moments, but I just know him so well now and he trusts me, so he is a lot better.”

Andrew Cooper second, Oliver Barrett third

Andrew Cooper and Pepper Jack finished second today on 43.6 with just the one rail down, while Oliver Barrett and Sandhills Special were third on 46.9, also with the one rail.

No one was clear and under time in the CCI4*S show jumping today, however two combinations left all rails up: Jessica Rae and Rascal (0.8 time faults) and Hannah Klep with Tulara Chicouve (1.2 time faults).

Full results from the CCI4*S can be found here.
